"[The Giving of Things Cold & Cursed is] beautifully written, superbly edited and trying to explain the incredible depth of aesthetic in this particular short is like trying to explain the virtues of a well aged Scotch vs moonshine."-Heather Omen, The Horror Nation

The Giving of Things Cold & Cursed is a haunting tale by critically-acclaimed horror author, Terry M. West. Baker Johnson is a flawed parapsychologist in the year 1925. After the death of Richard Johnson, Baker inherits his uncle's estate and moves into the legendary psychical researcher's home. But he soon discovers that the Black Room of the property, the place where haunted items are safely contained, has been emptied.

Included is a lengthy preview of the next Baker Johnson story, SERVANT OF THE RED QUILL.

I've read much of West's work, and while I'm a fan of it all, I believe he has a real strength writing in this era and with these characters. What he's created with Baker Johnson is something that shouldn't stop. This short is just enough to make you want to read another 300 pages of Baker Johnson tales as the man takes on the spiritual world. West's prose is excellent here and should be an example handed out to those who want to create good atmosphere and believable dialogue without boring the reader. Though I prefer this story over its sequel (which is also very good), it would be quite unfair to have this character within this setting die out. Here's to hoping West brings us more Baker Johnson tales in the future.

ok
I thoroughly enjoyed this tale from Mr. West. The thought of a room where such enchanted and dark items are stored fascinates me. I have considered visiting the Warren ' s museum of such items but find myself afraid to get something on me- being sensitive to spiritual and supernatural happenings. This story even touches on the way in which a writer is 'possessed' to write certain imaginings, which I am all too familiar with as well.

Well-written and creepy, I wouldn't mind hearing more about some of those items and how they were procured if Mr. West was moved to do so...
This is a horror story, yes, but that horror lies not in the events that are occurring during the narrative, but in the possibility of untold horrors to come. This dark tale is beautifully written and its true power lies in the brilliant descriptive powers of Mr. West. It is an elegiac tale of love and loss and comes with my highest recommendation.
Great story. Just the right amount of tension to make it a page turner and keep the suspense going. I could visualize a book - two in fact. One the Uncle's story ad one the Nephew's. Terry is a master of the short story!
Baker Johnson is an intriguing character. I loved the concept and the setting of this story. The idea of old, haunted objects always creeps me out. The strength of the story lies in the imagery and the sinister suggestion of great horrors that are about to occur. The horror in this well-written piece is subtle and creeping, showing Mr. West’s versatile writing style.
Mr. West has some mad writing skills, and I love nearly everything he puts out. This story however just didn't do it for me. It was a good story and I liked the concept. Haunted or cursed objects appeal to my sense of strangeness. It just seemed like more of an ending than a beginning. I would still recommend this story and author.
Terry M. West delivers an elegant and atmospheric introduction to a character and storyline that is something of a combination of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and The Outer Limits. Although this story did end quite abruptly without any real sense of climax, I have to say that it most definitely hooked me, and I will absolutely be reading The Servant of the Red Quill. I can't wait to find out what happens with Baker Johnson and the black room!

Mr. West surprised me with his writing style and prose in this story. It is understated, and quite beautiful, feeling very true to the 1920s era, yet with a tiny bit of a modern feel to it. I would absolutely (and probably will) recommend this story to a lot of people.
