Americans are not being told by the news media about the biggest story of their lifetimes. Every night every television news channel is desperately worried about the global economic crisis, looming recession, protracted unemployment, Wall Street and the housing market, government spending and taxation, and "going over the "fiscal cliff." But there is a much bigger untold story about a threat to the global economy--and to the very existence of global civilization--yet so rarely mentioned anywhere that, as described by the title of this book, it is an "Apocalypse Unknown."
The biggest story is this. December 2012 commenced the solar maximum, and significantly increased the possibility of a geomagnetic super-storm, something like a space hurricane, that could collapse electric grids and all the critical infrastructures that support modern civilization, and the lives of billions worldwide.
The Sun is a gigantic ongoing thermonuclear explosion, equivalent to billions of nuclear warheads detonating every second, contained by gravity. During the solar maximum the Sun hurls into space more solar flares and coronal mass ejections--basically enormous chunks of itself, many times larger than the Earth. If one of these solar torpedoes hits the Earth, it could generate a powerful electromagnetic pulse (EMP) that would collapse electric power grids everywhere, plunging every modern nation into a protracted blackout. Perhaps permanently.
Worldwide, billions could die.
The Earth is overdue for a solar super-storm that could inflict a global catastrophe. The last such super-storm, called the Carrington Event, happened in 1859. It caused fires in telegraph stations and destroyed the newly laid trans-Atlantic cable. But in those horse and buggy days civilization did not depend upon electricity. The Congressional EMP Commission estimated that a Carrington class geomagnetic super-storm probably occurs every century. Arithmetic suggests that, as of this writing in December 2012, as we enter another solar maximum, we are 53 years overdue for another Carrngton Event.
There is another part of this biggest story never told by the major media. Nightly news shows, to the extent they discuss foreign affairs, sometimes mention Iran's nuclear weapons program, and how it poses a threat to Israel and could provoke a nuclear arms race in the Middle East. The untold story is that a nuclear Iran--or nuclear terrorists, or North Korea, China, Russia or any state or non-state actor armed with a single nuclear missile--could make an EMP attack on the United States that would collapse the life-sustaining critical infrastructures, and threaten the existence of American civilization.
The damage from a nuclear EMP attack would be deeper and harder to repair than the damage from a natural EMP catastrophe caused by a Carrington class geomagnetic super-storm. Making a nuclear EMP attack is relatively easy to do. Iran openly writes about making a nuclear EMP attack to eliminate the United States as an actor on the world stage.
Hurricanes Sandy and Katrina have given America a slight foreshadowing of what life without electricity would be like, in the aftermath of an EMP inflicted by terrorists or the Sun.
This book is the story of a handful of political leaders, scientists, strategists, and grassroots activists who have struggled against gargantuan bureaucracies in government and industry to protect the nation from an EMP catastrophe. It tells where we are winning--and why we may lose. Perhaps the most important message of this book is that Washington is so blind and so broken that The People need to intervene, need to ride to the rescue like the U.S. cavalry of old, to make the ignorant, stubborn and negligent bureaucrats in government and industry do the right thing. National EMP preparedness needs to happen--now.
You need to read this book as it is fundamentally about saving your life. Just by knowing, you become part of the solution.
Apocalypse Unknown The Struggle To Protect America From An Electromagnetic Pulse Catastrophe edition by Peter Pry Politics Social Sciences eBooks
Apocalypse Unknown is a new book by Dr. Peter Vincent Pry. It's a big, heavy, expensive ($50) volume with the front cover showing a tiny Earth alongside a huge sun in the process of throwing off a coronal mass ejection.When I buy a new book, I always worry it will be a complete rehash of what I've already read. That wasn't the case here. The Department of Homeland Security asked Dr. Pry to suggest some National Planning Scenarios involving EMP threats, and he has included four of these. Some aspects of these threats were new to me. For example, low altitude nuclear detonations release Source Region EMP (SREMP) which can propagate through power lines to destroy transformers well outside the region affected by the blast. Weather balloons can lift nuclear weapons to 30 kilometers, high enough to create an EMP-affected region 1,200 kilometers in diameter. The region encompassed by a coronal mass ejection can be much larger than the Earth, so a solar storm like the Carrington Event could easily knock out power worldwide. Prolonged loss of power due to any of these events would probably lead to the Fukushima syndrome at some of the 104 nuclear power plants in the US, with burning of fuel rods and widespread radioactive fallout.
On the bright side, Dr. Pry lays out three independent, affordable proposals for hardening the grid to EMP. He points out that China and Russia have already hardened their systems, and several other countries have started to do so. He feels that with Homeland Security's heightened interest in the EMP threat, there is a good chance that we will be able to move ahead in dealing with an EMP.
Of course, those who consider us the Great Satan may regard our increased efforts towards self protection as a reason to speed up their own timetables.

Apocalypse Unknown The Struggle To Protect America From An Electromagnetic Pulse Catastrophe edition by Peter Pry Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews
Just as described. Fast shipment along with safe packaging. Thank you!
Great read and well worth delving into. There are some serious issues dealt with in this book and it is a must read for anyone interested in future events as well as the current global climate.
The book is packed with important information. Peter Pry is an excellent writer with a vast knowledge of the subject matter who has a mission to save our civilization from total destruction. We are all at very high risk and 99.99% of our population has no idea that the threat even exists. Our government needs to take action to mitigate this threat but without the public clamoring for action little is getting done. This book needs to get into many more hands!!!
VERY interesting book, very thought provoking, it will make you wonder why isn't our country doing more to prepare, this doesn't seem like an "if" but a when, scenario. And will have you looking into ways to prepare yourself
Excellent series of books from Dr. Pry, including 'The Long Sunday", "Electric Armageddon", and "Blackout Wars", also available here at . These four books give the reader a concise explanation of electromagnetic pulse, and why it alone is a clear and present danger to not only the United States of America, but also the world.
Apocalypse Unknown by Dr. Peter Vincent Pry should be read by three specific groups of people
1. Every federal and state legislator;
2. Everyone concerned about the vulnerability of the electric grid;
3. Everyone else in America.
Apocalypse Unknown is, quite simply, a book that could save the United States from catastrophe. It is the chronicle of a decades long fight by a few battered and under-resourced Americans to save America from a well-studied and well documented existential threat. The threat is that an electromagnetic pulse event – from a solar flare, or an EMP weapon – could take down the U.S. electric grid and place tens of millions of Americans at the risk of death from starvation, disease and societal collapse. Sound farfetched? Numerous Congressional hearings, federal agency and federal commission reports support Dr. Pry’s conclusions. (You can find many of these documents on my website CivilDefenseBook dot com.)
There are very few – if any – people better qualified to write about this fight than Dr. Peter Vincent Pry, who is himself one of these battered warriors. Dr. Pry is presently the Executive Director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security and works closely with the Congressional EMP Caucus. He has served on the staff of the Congressional EMP Commission as well as Congressional Strategic Posture Commission, the House Armed Services Committee and the Central Intelligence Agency.
By the time I finished this book, I was fuming. Despite the reams of evidence, scientific data, congressional hearings and federal reports confirming that something needs to be done to protect the grid, it has not been done. A small group of people, including Dr. Pry and a few bi-partisan members of Congress, have labored to push through legislation for years, but as I write this review the most recent legislation is languishing in committee.
How is this even possible that there could be such an important known threat to the national security of America and not a shred of legislation has come out of Congress? Dr. Pry outlines the impediments to protecting the grid and he names names. One of the biggest impediments to protecting the grid is the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) – the electric industry’s representative organization (i.e., its lobbyist). It seems that in DC money talks and the electric power industry has a lot of money. The electric power industry does not want to be “regulated” to protect the grid and makes well placed political campaign contributions. Meanwhile, most Americans are unaware that their lives hang in the balance.
But Apocalypse Unknown doesn’t simply document the problems and the struggle – it offers concrete solutions that our government needs to consider.
My recommendations
1. Buy this book;
2. Read it;
3. Send it to your Representative or Senator with a note that you will be voting for candidates who legislate to protect our electric grid. (And it would help to add that you have a big mouth and a lot of friends!)
This is an incredibly important book. Well researched, well written and Dr. Pry pulls no punches about who has worked to protect the grid – and who have been impediments. If you buy one book on EMP and grid security, this is THE book to buy.
I published some weapons effects manuals for the USAF in the mid 1960's. The US military has known about this problem for over 50 years and the civilian community is totally clueless on the issue. This is a great introduction to the problem. Dr. Pry gives much information, some of which was classified 50 years ago. Read, learn and write your congressman.
